About

As the first full-time hire at Canua, a brand new Fintech startup without even a logo, I collaborated directly with the CEO to establish a distinct visual identity. The journey began with a comprehensive workshop, employing Aarron Walter's methodology to simplify and concretize the client's vision.

Our first step involved selecting a character to serve as the embodiment of the product's personality, aiming to convey its essence in a tangible way. Through a meticulous process, we identified positive and negative traits, laying the groundwork for defining the brand's voice.

Moving forward, we curated a mood board, carefully assembling a collection of images to encapsulate the envisioned brand personality. Concurrently, we delved into color selection, ensuring optimal contrast ratios and refining shades to enhance readability in alignment with our defined traits.

Font selection was a crucial facet of our ideation process, prompting an exploration session to pinpoint the ideal typeface. Once the logo took shape, I compiled comprehensive brand guidelines, establishing rules for consistent and effective logo usage.

The Design Process

01
Research
We initiated the process with a thorough competitive analysis, analyzing the branding strategies and assets employed by our competitors.
02
Ideation & Definition
Moving into the Ideation & Definition phase, a workshop was meticulously organized, employing Aarron Walter's methodology. Here, we not only began crafting the foundational traits and personality of the brand but also curated inspiration and developed comprehensive mood boards to guide the visual narrative.
03
Colors
Transitioning to the Colors phase, our focus shifted to selecting hues that resonated with the brand essence. Rigorous evaluation of contrast ratios ensued, with iterative color edits undertaken to optimize readability in alignment with our predefined traits.
04
Typo
Typography took center stage as we aimed for legibility. An ideation session was organized, culminating in the creation of a canvas housing various fonts. The final selection emerged through this process.
05
Logo
Delving into the Logo phase, we clarified the message we aimed to convey through the logo. Post-creation, a set of usage rules were  defined to ensure consistent and effective application.
06
Brand Guidelines
The culmination of our efforts resulted in the establishment of comprehensive Brand Guidelines. A meticulously crafted document now serves as a reference, encapsulating the principles and rules that govern the brand's visual identity.

About

The name Canua was created by imagination. It describes a landscape of a group canoeing down a calm flowing river, getting closer and closer to a tunnel at the foot of a mountain, while the sun rises quietly in the distance.

Canua has multiple meanings – in Latin, it means basket; in Italian, it means canoe or tunnel. We wanted to give our company a name that worthily represents nature-centeredness and the soothing feelings associated with it.

Canua is trustworthy, capable, competent, intelligent, compassionate, luxury while still being inclusive, calming, tranquil.

The logo consists of a mark and a logotype. The icon shows the C letter that wraps the growing leaves around, symbolizing nature, health, and growing wealth.

The logotype shows our name using the Quincy CF Font Family. The warm letterforms give the text a smooth, calming motion referring to safety and financial wellbeing.
